Annie Hughes is the Director of the MA in TEYL at the Department of Educational Studies, University of York. The MA in TEYL was the first distance MA in a British university focusing completely on teaching English to young learners. MA in TEYL students, who are generally teachers, trainers, writers and EYL managers, are based worldwide. The programme is very highly regarded in the TEYL world and has been in existence for twelve years now.
Annie has also worked with The British Council, the BBC World radio, Cambridge ESOL and many Ministries of Education. Annie is a TEYL specialist consultant, curriculum designer, academic director, writer, materials writer, trainer trainer and teacher trainer. Annie is author of Carnival of Song (Cornelson Verlag) and JET: Songs and Rhymes (Mary Glasgow), the English language consultant for Usborne Publishing, co-author of Carousel 1 & 2, (Longman), Treasure Trail 3 & 4 (Penguin) and 100 Plus Ideas for Children (Heinemann).
She co-created The Penguin ELT Young Readers Series, has written many articles on teaching English to young learners and is co-editor of Grunschule Englisch, a magazine for teachers of English to young learners in Germany. Her own particular interests in TEYL are the use of song, story, and meaningful and purposeful activities.
